Backyard Lounge, Parking & Entertainment Flex Space
Del Ray neighborhood - Alexandria, VA
This is one of several small jewel box projects we have taken on from time-to-time and is only a stone's throw away from our office in Del Ray. Like most of our residential projects, this row house’s postage stamp back yard is no different than projects of a much larger scale, in that it still requires us to bring out a full array of skill-sets and honest application of design principles. The scope of this intricate “micro” project includes:
Proposed removal of over-sized planting/bed footprints and replace with expanded usable seating area pavement for enhanced outdoor passive recreation & dining. Final design configuration of proposed mini-chimney provides view and maintenance access to fire pit from both south patio elevation and elevation adjacent to parking/flex party space.
Re-configure and organize: pedestrian entrance walk access & circulation, newly accessible screen compartments for existing AC unit/water utilities, as well as storage of movable site furnishing & trash/recycle receptacles. New back doorstep alignment and dimension helps to expand usable space.
Replace and maintain back-alley parking footprint with new permeable pavement option. When the car is parked on the main street @ front building entrance, back parking area becomes usable flex party/entertainment space, with planting bed knee/seat-wall and use of movable site furnishings brought out of storage.
Modest and minimal planting footprint that is keyed into formal qualities of proposed new hardscape footprint. Some of the smaller at-grade planter space adjacent to back stairway will provide opportunity for the cultivation of edibles.
